What Really Happens When I Think Negative Thoughts?

I had a client who was obsessed with not allowing himself to think negative thoughts. He reframed all of his thoughts to always focus on the positive.

I asked him why he did it, and his answer reminded me of a silly idea I learned as a kid that terrified me for years!  (I’ll tell you the idea at the end. I bet you heard it before! A part of me is embarrassed to say.)

He said, “I’m scared that if I think negative thoughts, I’ll manifest them.”

Do you have that same story?

Today, I want to invite you to consider something else:

When you give your fears the attention they deserve, you allow yourself to heal the part of you that has those fears and begin to consciously co-create your circumstances.

Can you imagine a kid that is scared of the dark and every time he asks for your help, you stick your fingers in your ears, pretend not to hear him, and run away?

You most likely wouldn’t do that to a little child, so I invite you to get curious about why you do it to yourself?

All your fearful thoughts come from a story you learned about yourself and your relationship to the Universe.

A part of you learned something that terrifies you (Think back to growing up. We pass down fear from generation to generation).

What would happen if you paid attention to your fearful thought and allowed it to lead you to the real story that is scaring a part of you?  What would happen if you sat down with this scared part of you and investigated the story so that you could find a new truth?

When you hide from your fears and try to reframe them, your fears will find a way to get your attention.

Do you know the saying, “You can run, but you can’t hide!”

So, back to the story that I learned that terrified me for years.  When I would get in trouble, I always frowned. My mother told me time and time again, if I keep making that face, my face would stay the same forever.

I tried my hardest to not let any frowns out because what I learned from that is that my frowns are ugly and nobody will love me if I frown and am not happy all the time.

  3. Insightful as always. I think you’d love Geoff Thompson Hunting the Shadow. This post reminds me of the lessons in that book that I had forgotten. Off on holiday to have some ‘dates’ with my fears away from those who feel guilty if I am not happy all the time.

    Two things a) I’ve been led to believe that positive thoughts are more powerful than negative b) According to Esther HIcks I believe with have 17 seconds to refocus from a negative thought to a positive before it gathers nay momentum. So it ain’t all bad news 🙂
